Elizabeth Bennet: A Woman Ahead of Her Time

What if I told you that one of the boldest figures in books was not a woman holding a protest sign but just choosing not to marry for money but for love? Strange, right? The rebellion made no sense to some, but it was something ahead of her time. Love or money? Even today, people have it hard to choose, but she had her vision clear even then. Let’s dive back to the nineteenth century for not just an ordinary love story but one worth learning from.

Whenever I think about Pride and Prejudice, one thing always occupies the frontal lobe of my brain: Elizabeth Bennet. She was surely a woman far ahead of her time. In an era where women married for love and stability, Elizabeth knew that marriage was more than that. It’s not simply a contract, but rather a place where two people must coexist in harmony and affection on a long journey together. Elizabeth believed that love should come first. That does not mean she neglected the fact of being financially secure — she had it in mind better than any woman could have.

But she refused to marry someone she could not respect or place in her heart, just because it was the norm of that time. That says a lot about her rejection of Mr Collins, too. He may seem like the safest and most suitable proposal on paper. Marrying him could have given her stability and could have even protected her family from losing their belongings and their house, most probably after her father’s death. Most people thought it was idiotic of her to do so, but she knew living with a person she could not admire and respect would have made her sad and gloomy. She was not being naive; she just wanted both mutual affection and material stability, with love not open to compromise. She knew that prosperity mattered because, at that time, women had very few opportunities to support themselves. Her family’s situation proves that she could not risk monetary support. But she never let fear or societal pressure decide who she would spend her life with.

Her morals and ideas also appear in her relationship with Mr Darcy. She rejects him because of the way he behaved when they first met. She judged him on those bases and rejected him, which obviously turned out wrong later. His money never mattered to her because all she sought was love from her partner. His wealth was peanuts to her. I would say this moment speaks a lot about her character. A woman not driven by materialism is what sets her apart. A man’s character mattered far more to her than a stack of fancy papers with numbers on them.

And I love that she never really had to choose between love and stability in the end — she somehow had both: Darcy and financial well-being. Another thing I really admire about her is that she never let society overshadow her idea of happiness and her point of view. But at the same time, she wasn’t narrow-minded either — she listened to advice, thought about it properly, and then took what made sense to her and built from it.

That balance is exactly what makes her stand out to me. Elizabeth wasn’t out here rejecting marriage or money like she had some secret billionaire backup plan — she just refused to live a life that would make her miserable. For her, love came first, and fortune was something that could follow later, not the other way around. And honestly, that’s why she still feels like such an iconic character even today.

Even though the novel was written many years ago, Elizabeth’s ideas still feel shocking, especially for the timeline in which it was written. Today, most people agree that the emotional connection between two individuals is just as non-negotiable as material comfort. We still care about security regarding money, but we also desire some connection, some love, some devotion. Elizabeth set a standard long before such thinking became common, in a century when these ideas seemed unusual and strange to many people. This is what makes her such an astonishing character and why she is still talked about by readers today. So now, the choice is yours. Have love or money? But why choose one when you can have both?
