Islamabad Police have arrested the suspect in the killing of Pakistan Air Force Group Captain Asim Tariq within nine hours of the incident, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ali Nasir Rizvi said on Sunday.
According to the IGP, the officer was fatally shot at around 11 a.m. after intervening to protect a woman from an alleged attempt to force her into a vehicle.
Police identified the suspect as Saad Abbasi, who had reportedly been providing transport to the woman, identified as Nimra, for the past 10 days. Investigators said the suspect allegedly attempted to take her to a park against her wishes before the officer intervened.
The IGP said the suspect allegedly opened fire after being confronted, fatally injuring Group Captain Asim Tariq before fleeing the scene.
Police formed 11 investigation teams to trace the suspect. Investigators reviewed footage from 275 Safe City cameras and around 100 other surveillance cameras, analysed call data records, used artificial intelligence and examined digital communications to identify and arrest the suspect.
