Negotiators from the United States and Iran were set to begin peace talks in Switzerland on Sunday, despite conflicting claims over the status of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian state media reported that senior Iranian officials had arrived in Switzerland for the negotiations, while US Vice President JD Vance departed Washington for the talks, which Pakistan said would begin on Sunday.
Although Washington and Tehran have agreed to a 60-day ceasefire while negotiations continue, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced on Saturday that the Strait of Hormuz had been closed.
US officials, however, disputed the claim, with the US military saying commercial vessels were continuing to transit the strategic waterway.
