UK Investigates Train Collision That Killed Driver, Left 9 Critically Injured

Jarida Report

Authorities in the United Kingdom are investigating the cause of a train collision north of London that killed one driver and injured more than 80 passengers, nine of them critically.

The crash occurred on Friday near Bedford, about 90 kilometres north of London, when two London-bound trains operated by East Midlands Railway collided on the same track.

UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said it was “too early to speculate” on the cause of the accident but pledged “a thorough investigation … to ensure that lessons are learnt.”

British Transport Police Chief Constable Lucy D’Orsi said more than 80 people had been treated in hospital, with 28 still receiving care.

“Nine are in a critical condition,” she said. Police had earlier confirmed that the driver of one of the trains died at the scene.
