Two women arrested on allegations of theft and fraud died in police custody under unexplained circumstances, prompting authorities to order an inquiry into the incident.
According to police, the women, identified as Anmol and Amna, were detained by citizens and handed over to Township Police Station before being taken into police custody.
Officials said the two suspects were transferred to the police investigation wing after a case was registered against them. Their condition reportedly deteriorated while they were being shifted to Litton Road Women Police Station, and they died while being taken to hospital.
Police said both women had previous criminal records and were allegedly drug users. Their bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations to determine the exact cause of death.
A police spokesperson said a transparent and merit-based inquiry has been launched into the incident.
DIG Investigation Zeeshan Raza said the post-mortem was initially delayed because the deceased could not be immediately identified due to the absence of their national identity cards. He added that other family members have since come forward, and the autopsies will now proceed after completion of the necessary formalities.
Police said the post-mortem findings will help establish the circumstances and cause of the women’s deaths.
