Armed robbers looted Rs6.5 million from employees of an Edhi Home in Sohrab Goth on Friday, with police launching an investigation into the incident.
According to Edhi Foundation officials, the cash had been withdrawn from a bank for the payment of employees’ salaries. As staff returned to the welfare centre, four armed suspects allegedly followed them and escaped with the money.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Central Dr Imran visited the scene along with police officers. Investigators have begun recording witness statements and collecting CCTV footage to identify the suspects.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah took notice of the robbery and sought a report from the Inspector General of Police, directing authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the theft of funds intended for employees’ salaries.
The chief minister described the robbery at the Edhi Centre as unacceptable, noting that the institution serves vulnerable and underprivileged people. He instructed police to coordinate closely with Edhi management and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
Sindh Interior Minister Zia Ul Hassan Lanjar also ordered an immediate report from the Additional IG Karachi and directed police to use modern investigative techniques, including CCTV footage, to trace the suspects and recover the stolen money.
He said the Edhi Foundation is one of Pakistan’s most respected charitable organisations and stressed that those responsible for targeting such an institution should face strict legal action.
