Romanian authorities on Tuesday issued code orange heatwave warnings for more than half the country, with temperatures expected to reach 39°C over the next two days.
According to the National Meteorological Administration, the first warning will remain in effect until 10:00am local time on Wednesday, covering Maramureș, southern Banat, most of Transylvania, northeastern Moldavia and southwestern Oltenia.
Daytime temperatures in the affected regions are forecast to range between 35°C and 39°C, with the highest readings expected in the counties of Caraș-Severin, Mehedinți and Dolj.
Forecasters also warned of severe thermal discomfort, with the temperature-humidity index expected to exceed the critical threshold of 80 units.
Several areas are also expected to experience tropical nights, with minimum temperatures remaining between 20°C and 24°C, particularly in the Banat Hills.
A second code orange warning will take effect on Wednesday and remain in force until Thursday morning, covering parts of Moldavia, Oltenia, most of Transylvania, and southwestern and central Muntenia.
Authorities said daytime temperatures in those areas are expected to range between 35°C and 38°C, while nighttime temperatures will again remain unusually high.
The warnings follow nationwide heatwave alerts issued earlier this week, with temperatures in some parts of Romania previously forecast to climb as high as 41°C.
