Pakistan has intensified its diplomatic efforts to help ease tensions between the United States and Iran, with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand expected to arrive in Islamabad on July 20 for talks on the regional security situation, sources said on Sunday.
According to the sources, discussions between the Pakistani leadership and the visiting Canadian foreign minister will focus on the importance of restoring peace through the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar is scheduled to hold formal talks with Anand on Monday, while Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior leaders are also expected to meet the Canadian foreign minister during her visit.
In addition to regional security, the two sides are expected to discuss bilateral economic relations, trade cooperation, and potential Canadian support for Pakistan’s social sector.
Separately, Dar reiterated Pakistan’s call for de-escalation during a telephone conversation on Saturday with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, stressing that respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states is essential for lasting peace.
The two foreign ministers exchanged views on the latest regional developments, with the Kuwaiti foreign minister expressing concern over continued attacks on Kuwait’s territory and urging all parties to exercise restraint.
He also praised Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting dialogue and regional stability, stressing the importance of honouring ceasefire commitments under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and avoiding actions that could further escalate tensions.
The two leaders agreed to remain in close contact on issues of mutual interest.
