Buckingham Palace confirmed on Monday that Sir Keir Starmer has formally resigned as Prime Minister following an audience with King Charles III.
In a statement, the palace said “Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience of The King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept.”
The statement added that Lady Starmer was also received by the King.
Following Starmer’s resignation, Andy Burnham is expected to become Britain’s seventh prime minister in a decade after being invited by King Charles III to form a government.
Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has pledged to bring greater political stability and refocus government priorities on issues such as the cost-of-living crisis and the performance of public services.
The 56-year-old, widely known by the nickname “King of the North” for his leadership in Greater Manchester, is expected to begin the process of forming a new government after meeting the monarch.
