Nearly 70% of French Public Supports Nationwide Cost-of-Living Protests, Poll Finds

Jarida Report

Nearly seven out of 10 people in France support nationwide demonstrations planned for Saturday, October 17, against rising living costs and declining purchasing power, according to a poll published by French broadcaster BFMTV on Friday.

The planned mobilisation comes amid growing public concern over fuel prices, household expenses and government economic policies.

Calls for demonstrations have spread across social media, encouraging people to take to the streets in cities throughout France.

The movement has drawn comparisons with the Yellow Vest protests of 2018, which began in response to proposed fuel tax increases before developing into a broader campaign over living standards and economic inequality.

Student and youth organisations have also expressed support for the upcoming demonstrations and urged people to participate.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said authorities were preparing for approximately 250 gatherings and 80 marches across the country on Saturday.

The scale of the planned events indicates that demonstrations could take place in numerous cities, bringing together groups concerned about the rising cost of everyday necessities.

Organisers and prospective participants have raised concerns about the financial pressure on households, particularly the impact of higher fuel costs and reduced purchasing power.

The BFMTV poll suggests substantial public sympathy for the mobilisation ahead of Saturday’s demonstrations, although support for the protests does not necessarily indicate an intention to participate.

Authorities are preparing for the nationwide gatherings as France faces renewed public debate over living costs and the government’s economic policies.
