Iraq Proposes Regional Diplomatic Mission to Tehran and Washington Amid US-Iran Tensions

Jarida Report

Iraq has proposed establishing a committee of regional foreign ministers to visit Iran and the United States in an effort to ease tensions and pursue diplomatic solutions to their ongoing disputes.

The proposal was discussed on Friday during a telephone conversation between Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi, according to a statement issued by Iraq’s Foreign Ministry.

During the call, Araghchi outlined Iran’s proposed framework for restarting negotiations with Washington, building on an initiative Tehran had presented ahead of the US midterm elections.

The Iranian plan includes establishing a clear timetable for renewed talks, reopening the strategically important Strait of Hormuz and reviewing agreements previously reached during negotiations hosted by Pakistan.

According to the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, Tehran’s proposal also contains additional provisions addressing its nuclear programme, although specific details were not disclosed.

Hussein welcomed the explanation of Iran’s diplomatic initiative and suggested that a delegation comprising foreign ministers from regional countries could travel to both Tehran and Washington to explore opportunities for a peaceful settlement.

The two ministers also discussed the recent US midterm elections, their outcome and the potential implications for political and diplomatic developments across the Middle East.

The discussions come amid continued efforts to find a negotiated resolution to disputes between Iran and the United States, with Iraq seeking to encourage regional diplomatic engagement.

No timetable was announced for the proposed ministerial visits, and the countries that might participate in the initiative were not identified.
