Committee Reviews Telecom Bill as PPP Seeks Changes to Controversial Clauses

Jarida Report

A 10-member committee formed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reviewed the contentious provisions of the Pakistan Telecommunication Reorganization Amendment Bill, with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) reiterating its objections and calling for amendments before the legislation proceeds.

The committee, chaired by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, held detailed consultations at Parliament House on the disputed clauses. The prime minister has directed the panel to submit its recommendations within three days.

Addressing concerns over the proposed law, Tarar said the government has no intention of occupying private property or forcibly installing telecom infrastructure.

“There is no intention to occupy private property or install towers,” he said, adding that the bill would be revised to clearly reflect the government’s position.

Following the in-camera meeting, Tarar assured that no telecom tower would be installed and no work would be carried out on private property without the owner’s consent. He added that further clarifications would be incorporated into the legislation to address public concerns and eliminate misunderstandings surrounding the bill.
