Around 129,000 electricity consumers in Lithuania remained without power on Monday, three days after a powerful storm caused widespread disruption across the country.
Grid operator Energijos Skirstymo Operatorius (ESO) said outages had fallen significantly from a peak of around 280,000 customers during the storm, but restoration work was continuing.
“We really did have an exceptional storm,” ESO head Renaldas Radvila told broadcaster LRT, adding that it was estimated to have been around 35% more intense than Lithuania’s last major storm in 2024.
The severe weather also disrupted rail services after fallen trees and branches blocked tracks and damaged overhead power lines, affecting around 3,500 passengers.
Although debris has since been cleared, electricity disruptions remained on parts of the railway network, with passengers warned of delays of up to 30 minutes on Monday.
The storm is also expected to generate substantial insurance claims. Lietuvos Draudimas said insured losses had already exceeded €1 million ($1.1 million) and could eventually reach €3 million ($3.4 million).
“This was undoubtedly the largest storm of the year,” said Mantas Norkus, head of the insurer’s customer service centre.
Most claims involved damage to buildings and other property caused by strong winds, falling trees and branches, and heavy rainfall.
