Jarida Report

The United States and several Latin American countries have expressed solidarity with Venezuela and pledged assistance after powerful twin earthquakes struck the country on Wednesday, causing widespread destruction and raising fears of heavy casualties.

US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau said Washington was in contact with Venezuelan authorities and mobilising emergency assistance following the “devastating” disaster. State Department official Jeremy Lewin said a disaster assistance team had been activated and that the US would deploy search and rescue personnel, medical teams and humanitarian supplies in coordination with partners.

Messages of support also poured in from across Latin America.

Argentina said it “deeply regrets” the impact of the earthquakes and expressed solidarity with the Venezuelan people. Brazil conveyed its support for the government and people of Venezuela while wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Bolivia extended its support to the “brother people of Venezuela” and hoped for the swift recovery of those affected and the restoration of damaged areas. Chile offered humanitarian and rescue assistance, while Costa Rica said it “embraces the Venezuelan people with all our heart.”

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele said his country’s “hearts are with the people of Venezuela,” while Mexico expressed solidarity and sorrow over the destruction. Peru’s president-elect Keiko Fujimori also extended condolences to families affected by the disaster.
