Tesla, Xiaomi Among 11 Carmakers in China’s Largest Auto Recall

Jarida Report

Eleven automakers, including Tesla and Xiaomi, announced recalls and software updates in China on Friday as regulators intensify scrutiny of emergency door-release systems in electric vehicles.

The campaign, described as the largest automotive recall in China’s history, largely addresses concerns that mechanical emergency door handles can be difficult for occupants or rescuers to locate and operate following serious accidents.

Nine of the 11 manufacturers will install warning labels identifying emergency release handles free of charge, while several companies will also issue over-the-air software updates.

Tesla will recall around 2.98 million imported and China-made Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles beginning September 25, according to information submitted to China’s State Administration for Market Regulation.

The company said emergency mechanical door releases could be difficult to identify following a severe collision accompanied by electrical failure, potentially delaying occupants trying to escape or emergency workers attempting a rescue.

Tesla’s measures will include warning labels and a software update designed to automatically lower the vehicle’s windows following a collision.

Tesla, Xiaomi, Leapmotor, Xpeng, Zeekr and Lynk & Co were among at least six brands announcing their largest recalls to date.

The action comes as Beijing tightens safety standards across its rapidly expanding EV sector. China is also preparing to ban concealed or “hidden” vehicle door handles from 2027, becoming the first country to phase out the design.

Popularised by Tesla and subsequently adopted by numerous Chinese EV manufacturers, hidden handles have attracted scrutiny in both China and the United States over concerns about accessibility during emergencies.
