KARACHI: Police have identified Humayun, the brother-in-law of the husband of the slain woman, as the suspect in the Surjani Town killings, DIG Karachi West Irfan Baloch said on Thursday.
The bodies of a woman and her three children were discovered inside their home in Sector 7-D, Surjani Town, on Monday night. Police said all four victims had suffered head injuries inflicted with a sharp-edged weapon and a heavy object.
Speaking at a press conference, DIG West said Humayun had previously lived in the house as a tenant for around one-and-a-half years. He allegedly reached the house at about 2:30pm on the day of the incident, knowing that the woman’s husband was away.
According to police, Humayun had been harassing the woman and allegedly tried to assault her. When one of the children started crying, he allegedly picked up the child and struck her against a wall, DIG Baloch said.
The woman’s two other children returned home from a madrassa at around 3pm, according to police. Humayun allegedly opened the door for them before killing both children.
Police said the suspect later washed himself and cleaned the bloodied iron rod in the bathroom before leaving the house at around 6pm.
DIG Baloch said a female neighbour told investigators that she was present at the house when Humayun arrived.
According to the DIG, Humayun attempted to portray the incident as a robbery. However, police said their initial examination of the crime scene indicated that the killings were not linked to a robbery.
Sindh Home Minister Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar had taken notice of the incident and sought an immediate and detailed report from the SSP West.
The home minister directed police to investigate the case from all angles, gather evidence from the crime scene and determine the motive behind the killings.
He further ordered immediate action if evidence of any individual’s involvement was found and directed officials to keep him updated on developments in the investigation.
