Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has thanked US President Donald Trump for supporting the recently signed Makkah Joint Defence Agreement between Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, saying Islamabad would continue working with its partners to promote regional security.
In a post on X, Shehbaz said Pakistan, together with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye, would play a constructive role in strengthening the defence of the three countries as well as contributing to security across the wider region.
The prime minister also praised Trump’s leadership, crediting him with helping to avert what he described as a potential nuclear catastrophe in South Asia and saving millions of lives.
Shehbaz stressed that lasting peace was essential for the prosperity and future of the region’s people.
His remarks came after Trump welcomed the trilateral defence agreement, describing its signing as an important development for regional security.
“Very happy to see that Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan have recently, and finally, signed the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The US president said the pact demonstrated how countries in the Middle East were increasingly cooperating to strengthen their own defence capabilities, calling the agreement a “BIG, BOLD, IMPORTANT FIRST STEP.”
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye signed the defence agreement against the backdrop of the ongoing US-Iran conflict, which has affected neighbouring countries and disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea.
