The Supreme Court registrar’s office on Tuesday returned a contempt of court petition filed by Imran Khan’s sister, Dr Uzma Khan, after raising objections to the plea.
The petition was filed on Saturday by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), alleging that authorities had failed to comply with the Supreme Court’s August 18 order directing that Imran Khan be shifted to Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment.
The court had also ordered arrangements for weekly meetings between the former prime minister and his family.
The government subsequently filed a review petition challenging the order and describing it as “discriminatory in nature”.
Despite the court’s directions, Imran was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on August 21, where he underwent a medical examination before being returned to Adiala jail after doctors declared him medically fit.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said the decision to take Imran to PIMS instead of Shifa International Hospital was made because of security concerns arising from the presence of PTI workers along the planned route and outside Shifa.
According to sources, one of the objections raised to the contempt petition was that the parties accused of contempt had not been provided with a list detailing the allegations against them.
Speaking outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan maintained that the August 18 order had not been implemented.
“We requested an early hearing of the contempt petition,” Gohar said.
He said he later met the Supreme Court registrar at the public facilitation centre and was informed that objections had been raised.
“We have been given back the file of the contempt petition,” he said.
