Policeman killed, another seriously wounded in attack on patrol in Karak

Jarida Report

KARAK: A police constable was killed and another seriously wounded after unidentified gunmen opened fire on a police patrol in the Shatakai Dam area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Karak district, police said on Wednesday.

The patrol was carrying out routine duties within the jurisdiction of Sabirabad Police Station late Tuesday night when it came under attack. Constable Zafran was killed in the shooting, while Constable Muhammad Imtiaz sustained serious bullet wounds and was taken to hospital.

District Police Officer Imran Khan subsequently arrived at the scene with additional personnel. Police cordoned off the surrounding area, deployed forces at several locations and launched a search operation to track down the attackers. No group had immediately been identified as responsible.

The attack comes amid increased militant activity in KP. Data compiled by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies showed 54 terrorist attacks in mainland KP during August, compared with 36 in July. Karak itself has witnessed several recent attacks on police, including an IED strike on a patrol van in August that killed a constable and wounded six officers.
