Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said on Tuesday that eligible women in Mirpurkhas would soon receive pink scooters under the provincial government’s women-focused transport initiative.
Memon made the announcement while chairing a meeting of the Transport and Mass Transit Department, where officials reviewed the scooter programme as well as new bus routes and other public transport projects across the province.
The meeting also approved the launch of a new Peoples Bus Service route connecting Larkana with Qambar and Shahdadkot from September 18.
Memon said the service would benefit residents of the three cities and neighbouring areas as part of the government’s efforts to expand safe, affordable and modern public transport. Officials were instructed to ensure the route begins on schedule and provides appropriate facilities for passengers.
Karachi’s Green and Orange Line BRT services were also reviewed. According to Memon, daily ridership on the Green Line has reached 88,000 passengers, while the Orange Line is being used by more than 11,000 people each day.
Officials also discussed possible routes for additional electric and double-decker buses, with the minister calling for the planning process to be completed soon.
The Pink Scooter programme forms part of a broader effort by the Sindh government to improve women’s mobility. In June, Memon also announced plans for an electric-vehicle-based Pink Taxi Scheme offering transport specifically for women.
At the time, he said traffic police had been instructed to act against men found using scooters distributed to women under the programme.
“We have received complaints that some women’s brothers are using the scooters, and necessary instructions have been issued to address the matter,” Memon said.
He also acknowledged that the initial distribution of scooters had been limited, explaining that only 150 women possessed driving licences when the programme was launched.
The planned Pink Taxi Scheme is expected to follow the scooter initiative, with the provincial government saying further details will be announced later.
