Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has appointed international aviation executive Adrian Hamilton-Manns as its new chief executive officer, marking a significant leadership change as the national carrier continues its restructuring and privatisation process.

The airline’s board announced the appointment on Monday, describing Hamilton-Manns as an experienced aviation professional with more than three decades of expertise in airline management, restructuring and business transformation.

In an official statement, PIA said Hamilton-Manns “brings a wealth of leadership and strategic experience within the global aviation sector”, adding that his appointment “marks a pivotal chapter” in the airline’s ongoing transformation.

According to the airline, Hamilton-Manns has previously served as chief executive of three airlines and has extensive experience in reviving struggling aviation businesses.

The board also paid tribute to outgoing CEO Air Vice Marshal Amir Hayat, acknowledging his contributions during a four-and-a-half-year tenure.

“As Hamilton-Manns assumes the role of CEO, the consortium and the entire management board extend their deepest gratitude to the outgoing CEO, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Amir Hayat, for his outstanding service and dedication to this vital national role,” the statement said.

PIA credited Hayat with steering the airline through significant industry challenges, introducing structural reforms, improving operational efficiency and preparing the carrier for privatisation.

“His relentless efforts were central to initiating comprehensive structural reforms, optimising operational efficiencies and successfully preparing the airline for its highly anticipated privatisation phase,” the statement added.

The airline said the reforms undertaken during Hayat’s leadership had established an important foundation for its future commercial viability.

PIA expressed confidence that Hamilton-Manns’ international experience would help accelerate its strategic objectives, improve passenger services and support sustainable profitability.

According to Forbes Middle East, Hamilton-Manns previously served as CEO of Oman’s SalamAir and Kazakhstan-based FlyArystan. His professional background also includes senior roles at South African Airways and Virgin Australia.

The appointment comes as PIA seeks to strengthen its commercial performance, modernise operations and improve its competitiveness in the international aviation market.
