Government Seeks PPP, MQM-P Nominations for Parliamentary Electoral Reforms Committee

Jarida Report

The federal government has formally approached the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P), seeking nominations for a parliamentary committee tasked with overseeing electoral reforms.

Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has written to PPP Chief Whip Aijaz Jakhrani and MQM-P Chief Whip Amin-ul-Haq, requesting that their respective parties nominate lawmakers to serve on the proposed committee.

Under the proposed proportional representation arrangement, the PPP has been allocated five seats on the committee, while the MQM-P will have one representative.

The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is entitled to nine seats based on the proposed numerical distribution.

However, government sources indicated that the PML-N is considering reducing its own representation to accommodate lawmakers from allied political parties.

The proposed adjustment would allow the government to broaden participation among its coalition partners in the parliamentary body responsible for examining electoral reforms.

The committee is expected to provide a forum for parliamentary parties to discuss proposed changes to the electoral framework and develop recommendations for consideration by the legislature.

The government has not yet announced the committee’s final composition or a timetable for its first meeting.
