A Pakistan Air Force Group Captain was martyred after intervening to rescue a woman during an alleged attempted abduction in Islamabad, police said.
According to initial investigations, Group Captain Asim Tariq was passing through Shaheen Chowk near Ninth Avenue when he saw a motorcyclist allegedly attempting to force a woman onto a motorcycle. He intervened, enabling the woman to escape.
Police said the suspect, identified as Saad, allegedly opened fire after the confrontation, fatally injuring the officer before fleeing the scene. An investigation has been launched and evidence is being collected.
According to the woman’s statement, the suspect was her colleague who had offered to take her to work but allegedly changed the route in an attempt to take her elsewhere. She resisted before the officer stepped in.
Group Captain Asim Tariq is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has sought a report from the Islamabad police chief and directed authorities to arrest the suspect and ensure that the case is investigated promptly.
