Tehran: One person was killed and three others injured in what an Iranian official described as a US attack on a commercial vessel near Qeshm Island in southern Iran early Sunday.
Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, citing Qeshm Governor Amir Teymouri, reported that the vessel was struck at around 5am local time near Hengam Island and the Shib Deraz coast of Qeshm Island.
Teymouri attributed the attack to what he called the “US terrorist enemy.”
Iranian authorities did not immediately provide further information about the vessel, the nature of the strike or the circumstances surrounding the incident. There was also no immediate confirmation from the United States.
Separately, the UK Maritime Trade Operations said on Sunday that a vessel travelling through the Strait of Hormuz had been struck by an unidentified munition.
UKMTO reported no immediate casualties or damage from that incident. It was not immediately clear whether the two reports referred to the same vessel or separate incidents.
