Pakistan Railways has begun transporting diesel by freight train to Pakistan State Oil (PSO) depots following instructions from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as authorities work to maintain fuel supplies and transport services across the country.
A freight train carrying 750,000 litres of diesel from Rawalpindi has already reached the Peshawar region, according to officials.
Another train carrying one million litres of diesel from Mahmood Kot is expected to arrive in the region later in the day.
Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi has directed officials to continue diesel shipments on a daily basis. Authorities said regular and timely deliveries would help maintain fuel availability and ensure continuity of public transport services.
The development comes as the government continues implementing the Prime Minister’s Petrol Subsidy Scheme, with more than five million people registering nationwide for fuel relief.
The latest figures were presented during a meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema and attended by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, IT Minister Shaza Fatima, the minister of state for finance, provincial representatives and officials from relevant institutions.
The Ministry of IT and Pakistan Digital Authority briefed participants on the implementation of the Fuel Relief Scheme.
Officials said fuel relief tokens are being successfully issued to registered beneficiaries and that most registration and operational problems encountered at petrol stations have now been resolved.
Payments have also been made to most participating petrol stations.
State Bank officials told the meeting that the remaining payment-related issues are expected to be resolved within one to two days.
