Netflix is reportedly in talks to acquire film-focused social platform Letterboxd, joining a list of potential buyers that includes Sony Pictures Entertainment, Paramount and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian.
According to a report by Variety, Letterboxd has been exploring a potential sale in recent months. The platform, founded in 2011, has grown into one of the world’s most popular online communities for film lovers, allowing users to review, rate and discuss movies.
Letterboxd is majority-owned by Canadian holding company Tiny, which acquired a 60% stake in the company in 2023 at a reported valuation of $50 million to $60 million. The remaining 40% is held by co-founders Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow.
The company has also recently expanded its offerings by launching an online movie rental service, making it an increasingly attractive asset for entertainment and technology companies looking to strengthen their presence in digital film communities.
