The National Assembly’s Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights (PCCR) has condemned the deaths of newborn infants in the fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and called for a transparent and impartial investigation into the tragedy.
The caucus expressed profound grief over the deaths and said the investigation should establish the cause of the fire, assess safety and emergency arrangements and determine responsibility for any failures that contributed to the loss of life.
It called for a detailed examination of the circumstances surrounding the blaze, including existing safety measures, the emergency response and the conduct of relevant officials and authorities.
The PCCR stressed that any negligence, lapse or institutional failure identified during the investigation should result in those responsible being held accountable under the law.
PCCR Convenor Dr Nikhat Shakeel, MNA, expressed condolences to the bereaved families and solidarity with parents who lost their newborn children in the fire.
The caucus said protecting children, particularly newborns and other vulnerable children in institutional care, was a fundamental responsibility of state institutions.
It called for stricter enforcement of safety standards, stronger emergency preparedness and greater institutional accountability to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The PCCR also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting legislative, institutional and policy measures aimed at strengthening the protection, safety and welfare of children across the country.
