NDMA Warns of Glacier Melting, Flash Floods as Pre-Monsoon Rains Approach

Jarida Report

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned of an increased risk of glacier melting, flash floods and landslides as pre-monsoon rains are expected to affect several parts of Pakistan from Sunday through July 3.

The authority advised tourists, travellers and residents in northern regions to avoid glacier-fed rivers and streams, warning that rising temperatures combined with rainfall could create hazardous conditions.

In its latest weather advisory, the NDMA said intermittent pre-monsoon showers are forecast across parts of the country until July 3.

It warned that persistent heat, coupled with rainfall during the first week of July, could accelerate glacier melting and heighten the risk of flash floods in mountainous areas.

The NDMA also cautioned that the accelerated melting of glaciers has increased the likelihood of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs), sudden surges in rivers and streams, and flash flooding.
