Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of an unidentified woman in her 70s was discovered inside a black bin bag in Liverpool’s Stanley Park.
Merseyside Police said officers were called to the park at around 5:25 p.m. on Friday after a member of the public discovered the remains in the park’s walled garden.
Investigators believe the woman’s body may have been at the location for several weeks. Police have so far been unable to establish her identity and are appealing to the public for assistance.
“We believe that her body may have been in the black bin bag at this location for a number of weeks,” Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson said at a news conference.
Police described the woman as white, in her 70s, approximately 5 feet 2 inches tall, of small build and with strawberry-blonde hair.
Assistant Chief Constable Andy Ryan described the discovery as a “shocking crime” and urged anyone who believed they might know the woman to contact police.
“If anyone recognises the description of this woman or you have any concerns whatsoever about someone you may know and have not seen or heard from recently, please tell us as a matter of urgency,” Ryan said.
Detectives are working to establish the woman’s identity, determine the circumstances surrounding her death and identify those responsible.
