Germany on Monday criticized Israel’s decision not to pursue a criminal investigation into the 2024 strike on a World Central Kitchen convoy in Gaza that killed seven aid workers, calling for a transparent examination of the incident.
The German Foreign Ministry said Berlin regretted the Israeli military’s August 19 announcement that it would not open a further investigation into the attack.
“We regret the IDF announcement on Aug. 19, 2026, that it would not initiate an investigation into the incident involving employees of the organization World Central Kitchen,” a ministry spokesman said.
Germany stressed that Israel was expected to fulfil its obligations under international humanitarian law, including investigating and prosecuting potential violations.
“The government continues to call for a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the incident by the competent Israeli authorities,” the spokesman added.
The Israeli military recently announced decisions on several cases involving allegations of misconduct during its operations in Gaza. It said two suspected war crimes cases would be investigated further while three other high-profile cases would be closed.
Among those closed was the April 2024 strike on the World Central Kitchen convoy, in which seven aid workers were killed while travelling in Gaza.
The deaths prompted widespread international condemnation at the time and intensified scrutiny of the protection afforded to humanitarian personnel operating in the Palestinian territory.
Germany’s latest statement indicates that Berlin does not consider Israel’s handling of the case sufficient and continues to seek further investigation and possible accountability where violations of international humanitarian law are established.
