New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that confidence in BRICS among countries of the Global South was growing as the world faced increasing geopolitical tensions and other major challenges.
Addressing an expanded session on the second day of the BRICS Leaders’ Summit in New Delhi, Modi said the grouping had sought to promote more inclusive global development.
“We have tried to promote inclusive global growth through the BRICS,” Modi said.
“We believe that the benefits of developed solutions in the BRICS should not only be limited to the BRICS. They should be made adaptable and accessible according to the needs of the Global South,” he added.
Modi said mounting international tensions, the Covid-19 pandemic, climate-related disasters and disruptions to global supply chains had demonstrated the interconnected nature of contemporary crises.
“The number of tensions in the world is constantly increasing,” he said, adding that recent crises had “shown that in today’s interconnected world, no crisis is limited to one area. That is why we have focused on increasing resilience in all areas.”
Addressing BRICS leaders during the session on “resilience, innovation, cooperation, and sustainability,” Modi said the grouping was increasingly gaining the trust of developing countries.
“The confidence of the countries of the Global South has increased in the BRICS,” he said.
“Their voice is heard in the BRICS. Their experience is respected. And solutions are not only made for them, but are made together with them,” he added.
Modi described diversity and cooperation as key strengths of the grouping.
“The power of BRICS is in our diversity and cooperation,” he said. “We may be rooted in different realities, but together we rise through cooperation and blossom for humanity.”
“Our diversity, our identity, our cooperation, our inspiration, and our progress should be useful to the entire humanity,” he added.
Referring to the number of countries represented at the summit, Modi said: “This is proof of the increasing power, attraction, and unparalleled faith of BRICS.”
The two-day summit, which began on Saturday, has brought BRICS leaders and representatives of partner countries to the Indian capital. Among those attending are the presidents of China, Russia and Iran.
The summit is taking place against the backdrop of the US-Iran war, now in its seventh month, and the Russia-Ukraine war, which has continued for more than four years.
