Argentina booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final with a dramatic 2-1 victory over England at Atlanta Stadium in the United States on Wednesday.
The opening half was a tightly contested affair, with both sides adopting a cautious approach and creating few clear-cut chances. England’s best opportunity came through John Stones, whose header tested the Argentine defence, while Enzo Fernández threatened at the other end with a powerful effort. Djed Spence also impressed with several energetic runs down the right flank.
England finally broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Declan Rice released Morgan Rogers, whose low cross was turned home by Anthony Gordon to give the Three Lions the lead.
Argentina drew level in the 85th minute as Enzo Fernández collected a short corner before firing a low shot through a crowded penalty area and beyond Jordan Pickford.
With extra time looming, the defending champions completed the comeback in stoppage time. Lionel Messi regained possession and delivered an inviting cross into the box, where substitute Lautaro Martínez headed home from close range in the 90+2nd minute to seal victory.
The win sends Argentina into the World Cup final, where they will face Spain, while England will take on France in the third-place playoff on Saturday.
