Merino Strikes Late Winner Again as Spain Knock Out Belgium

Jarida Report

Spain booked their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinals after Mikel Merino scored another late winner in a 2-1 victory over Belgium in Los Angeles on Friday.

La Roja took the lead in the 30th minute through Fabián Ruiz. Lamine Yamal’s run down the right set up Pedro Porro, whose low cross was met by Dani Olmo. Although Thibaut Courtois produced an excellent save, Ruiz reacted quickest to smash the rebound into the roof of the net.

Belgium levelled against the run of play four minutes before half-time when Timothy Castagne’s cross found Charles De Ketelaere, who powered a header past Unai Simón to hand Spain their first goal conceded of the tournament.

Spain dominated possession throughout the second half but struggled to break down Belgium’s resolute defence until the 88th minute. Pau Cubarsí’s long-range effort was parried by goalkeeper Senne Lammens into the path of Merino, who fired home the rebound to seal a dramatic victory.

The late strike sends Spain into the World Cup semifinals, where they will face France in a blockbuster showdown.
