Mamdani-Backed Candidates Secure Key Primary Wins in New York

Jarida Report

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani scored a series of major victories in Tuesday’s Democratic primary elections, strengthening his bid to reshape the party around democratic socialist policies.

Candidates endorsed by Mamdani won three high-profile contests, including former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander, who defeated two-term Representative Dan Goldman.

In another race, Assemblymember Claire Valdez defeated Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso to win an open congressional seat, while activist Darializa Avila Chevalier narrowly unseated five-term Representative Adriano Espaillat, the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

The victories further consolidate the political influence of the 34-year-old mayor, whose election in 2025 marked a significant shift in New York City politics.

The results also follow recent gains by democratic socialist candidates in other major US cities, including victories in Washington, D.C., and a runoff appearance in Los Angeles.

Mamdani’s efforts build on a broader movement that gained momentum after Senator Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign, which helped bring democratic socialist ideas into the mainstream and inspired a new generation of progressive political leaders.
