PESHAWAR: The federal government on Sunday appointed Dr Muhammad Fakhre Alam Irfan as the new Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), with the appointment taking effect immediately, according to an official notification reported by ARY News.
The appointment comes after President Asif Ali Zardari approved the imposition of emergency measures and Governor’s Rule in the province under Articles 232 and 234 of the Constitution, on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The presidential proclamation cited a rise in terrorist incidents and security threats, including attacks on government installations and law enforcement agencies, as reasons for the decision.
It also alleged that the provincial government had failed to take adequate steps to address terrorism and lawlessness. The proclamation further referred to a report by the provincial governor that raised concerns about the functioning of the constitutional system and the provincial administration.
