The coffin of Iran’s slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei is being transported from Iraq’s holy city of Najaf to Mashhad, where he will be laid to rest on Thursday at the Imam Reza shrine, concluding six days of funeral ceremonies held across Iran and Iraq.
According to Iran’s Mehr News Agency, the coffin departed Najaf on Thursday for the final leg of the funeral procession after millions of mourners participated in ceremonies in both countries.
Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, head of Khamenei’s office, said the late leader had personally requested to be buried near the shrine of Imam Reza, one of Shia Islam’s holiest sites, in the northeastern city of Mashhad.
