Karachi Police Briefly Detain JI Local Government Representatives

Jarida Report

KARACHI: Police briefly detained more than 10 elected Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) local government representatives at various police stations across Karachi before releasing them a few hours later.

JI Karachi chief Munim Zafar Khan said union committee (UC) chairmen and councillors from different parts of the city had been summoned to police stations and detained without explanation.

He alleged that an undeclared crackdown against JI was underway in Karachi and said reports had also emerged of police raids at several locations.

Munim Zafar condemned the detentions, claiming the action had been taken at the behest of those who came to power through what he called “Form 47.” He further alleged that the move was intended to hinder development projects being undertaken by JI’s elected representatives.

The JI leader said the detentions would not deter the party’s representatives from continuing their work for the city and called for their release.
