GAZA CITY: An Israeli strike on the Islamic University in Gaza City killed three employees and injured eight students on Sunday, according to university staff and a local hospital.
Al Shifa Hospital said it had received three bodies and treated eight people wounded in the drone strike. Two university sources confirmed that the dead were employees and the injured were students.
The university said its campus and surrounding areas had been targeted twice on Sunday. In a statement, it condemned the attacks and mourned those killed.
Asked about the strike, the Israeli military said the incident was under review.
Separately, Gaza’s Civil Defence agency reported that five other people had been killed elsewhere in the territory.
Gaza’s Education Ministry also condemned the attack, saying the international community’s silence over strikes on students and universities was encouraging further violence.
The ministry said the higher education sector had suffered extensive destruction during the war, with 95 per cent of buildings belonging to academic institutions damaged. It added that 10 students and educators had been killed by Israeli fire over the preceding six days.
The attack comes amid continued damage to Gaza’s education infrastructure, with universities and other academic institutions facing widespread destruction.
