Brendon McCullum Praises Shadab Khan’s Heroic Century as Pakistan Clinch Dramatic One-Wicket Victory Over England

Jarida Report

England white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum has praised Pakistan all-rounder Shadab Khan for his exceptional unbeaten century, which inspired a dramatic one-wicket victory over England and secured Pakistan’s place in the tri-series final.

McCullum described Shadab’s performance as outstanding, highlighting his composure, determination and ability to deliver under immense pressure when Pakistan appeared to be heading towards defeat.

Reflecting on England’s narrow loss, the coach acknowledged that defeats often expose weaknesses and areas requiring improvement. However, he maintained that England could still draw several positives from the contest.

McCullum also commented on a dramatic moment involving an LBW appeal against Shadab. The Pakistan all-rounder’s initial reaction suggested he believed his team had already secured victory, but the umpire’s decision prompted him to seek a review. The decision was subsequently overturned, allowing Shadab to continue his innings.

The England coach played down the incident, describing such moments as part of the unpredictable nature of cricket.

He also expressed confidence in England captain Harry Brook, praising his leadership and approach to developing match strategies through consultation with teammates and coaching staff.

Shadab’s unbeaten century proved decisive in one of Pakistan’s most extraordinary ODI victories. With the team reduced to 154 for nine, England appeared firmly in control and Pakistan’s chances of reaching the target seemed remote.

However, Shadab produced a remarkable recovery alongside fast bowler Haris Rauf, adding 89 runs for the final wicket to turn the match in Pakistan’s favour.

The partnership established a new record for the highest 10th-wicket stand in a successful ODI run-chase, completing an unlikely victory and sending Pakistan into the tri-series final.

Speaking at a press conference after the match, Shadab credited Rauf for his crucial contribution, acknowledging the patience and discipline displayed by the fast bowler during their match-winning partnership.

He remarked that players batting at number 10 often preferred attempting big shots and hitting sixes, but Rauf had shown remarkable restraint and maturity in supporting the run-chase.

Shadab said his century was particularly meaningful because it helped Pakistan secure an important victory, adding that he was delighted to have contributed to the team’s success.

The all-rounder dedicated his memorable innings to his family, recognising their importance in his cricketing journey.

Asked about comparisons with Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who is renowned for producing extraordinary innings under pressure, Shadab dismissed the suggestion that a single performance warranted such comparisons.

He maintained that it would be unfair to compare him with Maxwell on the strength of one innings alone.

Pakistan’s remarkable recovery from the brink of defeat, led by Shadab’s century and Rauf’s determined support, secured a place in the tri-series final and provided one of the competition’s most memorable finishes.
