FIFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine Football Association (AFA) over a Falkland Islands banner displayed by Argentina’s players during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, along with several other alleged breaches of tournament regulations.
The investigation follows Argentina’s semi-final victory over England in Atlanta, where players celebrated by holding a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”). The islands are administered by Britain but are claimed by Argentina.
In a statement, FIFA said the case concerns “inappropriate messages” and a possible violation of rules prohibiting the use of sporting events for demonstrations unrelated to sport.
The Argentine Football Association is also under investigation over allegations of discriminatory chants and gestures, delayed kick-offs, security shortcomings, and objects thrown by supporters during the tournament.
Separately, Leandro Paredes, Nahuel Molina and Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala are facing potential disciplinary action over alleged assault-related incidents following the World Cup final against Spain.
In addition, Nahuel Molina, Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi are being investigated for alleged unsporting behaviour during the final.
FIFA said all individuals and the Argentine Football Association will have the opportunity to respond before its Disciplinary Committee reaches a decision.
