Global K-pop sensation BTS announced on Wednesday that it will not submit any of its music for consideration at the 69th Grammy Awards, saying it hopes music will be appreciated without being defined by language or region.
All seven members — Jin, Suga, J-Hope, RM, Jimin, V and Jung Kook — shared the same statement on their individual Instagram accounts.
“We have decided not to submit to the Grammys this year,” the group said.
“We hope music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language,” the members added, while thanking their fans, collectively known as ARMY, for their continued support.
The group did not provide a specific reason for the decision or indicate which Grammy categories it was referring to.
The announcement comes just over a month after the Recording Academy unveiled five new award categories for the 2027 Grammy Awards, including Best Asian Pop Music Performance.
According to the Academy, the new category is intended to honour contemporary pop music originating from or widely recognised in Asian markets, including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop, featuring meaningful use of one or more Asian languages.
While the addition was presented as recognition of the growing global influence of Asian pop music, some fans have criticised the move, arguing that it could sideline Asian artists by separating them from the Grammys’ main competitive categories.
BTS has received five Grammy nominations during its career but has yet to win the prestigious music award.
The 69th Grammy Awards are scheduled to be held on 7 February 2027.
