Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has surpassed $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, becoming the highest-grossing film of the acclaimed director’s career, according to industry box-office data.
The adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic reached approximately $1.104 billion globally through its fourth weekend in cinemas after opening on July 17.
The film follows Odysseus, king of Ithaca, on his perilous journey home following the Trojan War. Matt Damon leads the cast as Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron.
The milestone takes The Odyssey past Nolan’s previous biggest commercial success, The Dark Knight Rises, which earned around $1.08 billion worldwide following its 2012 release.
It also becomes Nolan’s third film to cross the $1 billion mark, joining The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. His 2023 historical drama Oppenheimer finished its theatrical run with approximately $975 million worldwide.
Premium-format screenings have contributed significantly to the film’s performance. According to industry tracking data, IMAX screenings have generated more than $289 million globally, making The Odyssey the highest-grossing release in the format’s history.
The film is also the fifth 2026 release to surpass $1 billion worldwide, joining Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Toy Story 5, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Michael.
The Odyssey remains in cinemas, leaving its final worldwide box-office total yet to be determined.
