Asian leaders on Thursday expressed condolences and pledged assistance to Venezuela after powerful twin earthquakes struck the South American country, killing dozens and injuring hundreds.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was “deeply saddened” by the devastation caused by the earthquakes.
“On behalf of the people of India, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, especially to the families who have lost their loved ones,” Modi said, adding that India stood ready to provide all possible assistance.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also conveyed his sympathies, saying he was “deeply saddened” by the loss of life and widespread destruction.
“On behalf of the people of Pakistan, I convey our heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Venezuela, especially the families of the victims,” Sharif said, adding that Pakistan stood in solidarity with the Venezuelan people and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also extended his condolences, saying the Philippines stood in solidarity with Venezuela and hoped for the safety and swift recovery of affected communities.
According to Venezuela’s interim President Delcy Rodríguez, at least 32 people were killed and around 700 injured in the country’s deadliest earthquake disaster in more than a century. Seismologists said a 7.2-magnitude foreshock near San Felipe was followed about 40 seconds later by a stronger 7.5-magnitude earthquake near Yumare.
