Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah Rejects Canal Project, Vows to Defend Province’s Water Rights

Jarida Report

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has voiced strong opposition to the federal government’s $3.3 billion Green Pakistan Initiative, which proposes constructing six canals to irrigate 1.2 million acres in south Punjab. Speaking in Sukkur, Shah emphasized that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) believes this project could harm Sindh’s water resources and requires approval from the Council of Common Interests (CCI) as mandated by Article 155 of the Constitution. He highlighted Sindh’s existing water scarcity, noting an 11 million acre-foot shortage between 1976 and 2022. The PPP has pledged to protect Sindh’s rights and continues to oppose the initiative.
