The Punjab Assembly has enacted the Punjab Prohibition of Kite Flying (Amendment) Act, 2024, instituting a comprehensive ban on kite flying across the province. This legislation imposes stringent penalties: individuals caught flying kites may face imprisonment of three to five years, fines up to Rs2 million, or both. Manufacturers and transporters of kites are subject to even harsher consequences, including five to seven years in prison and fines up to Rs5 million. The law also addresses offenses involving minors, stipulating fines ranging from Rs50,000 to Rs100,000, with repeated violations leading to potential imprisonment under the Juvenile Justice System Act 2018. These measures aim to prevent fatalities and injuries caused by hazardous kite strings, particularly those coated with sharp materials.
