Three traffic police personnel were martyred and three others, including two civilians, were injured when unidentified armed attackers opened fire on a traffic police vehicle in the Wazirabad area of Tank district on Monday, police said.
According to an initial police report, the attack occurred within the jurisdiction of City Police Station.
The martyred personnel were identified as Constable Gul Amin, Constable Saleem Shah and traffic police driver Fayyaz.
Traffic in-charge Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Asmatullah was also injured in the shooting.
Two passersby, identified as Qaiser and Zafar Hussain, sustained injuries and were taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Police said the attackers fled the scene in the traffic police vehicle following the shooting.
A large police contingent subsequently reached the area and established a security cordon. A search operation has been launched to locate the attackers, while authorities have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi expressed grief over the deaths of the three police personnel and sought a report from the relevant authorities.
The governor offered condolences to the families and colleagues of the deceased personnel and directed officials to ensure all possible medical treatment for those wounded in the attack. He also prayed for their speedy recovery.
