Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday filed a contempt of court petition in the Supreme Court, alleging that authorities violated its order to transfer party founder Imran Khan to Shifa International Hospital for medical treatment.
The petition follows Khan’s transfer to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) early Friday, where he underwent medical examinations before being returned to Adiala Jail after doctors declared him “medically fit”.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Khan was taken to PIMS instead of Shifa because of a security situation created by PTI workers gathered outside the private hospital and along the planned route.
PTI Secretary-General Salman Akram Raja reached the Supreme Court on Saturday, where the petition was filed by Khan’s sister Dr Uzma Khan, lawyer Uzair Bhandari and Raja.
The petition asks the court to initiate contempt proceedings over the alleged non-compliance, issue show-cause notices to the respondents and order their personal appearance before the court.
It also seeks Khan’s immediate transfer to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for examination and treatment, as directed by the Supreme Court.
PTI has further requested the appointment of a court officer or local commission to oversee implementation of the order.
The petition names Islamabad Chief Commissioner Sohail Ashraf, the interior secretary, inspector general of prisons and a jail superintendent as respondents, and asks the Supreme Court to find those responsible for violating its directions guilty of contempt and punish them in accordance with the law.
