The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) has withdrawn its endorsement of Gianni Infantino for another term as FIFA president, citing concerns over governance, transparency and consultation within world football’s governing body.
The FAI said on Thursday that its board had decided to rescind a letter of support for Infantino submitted earlier this year and had written to FIFA explaining the reasons behind the decision.
“The Association is grateful for the support that FIFA provides to Irish football, but recent events have raised significant concerns regarding governance, transparency and the lack of meaningful consultation,” the FAI said.
The association added that its own recent experience with governance issues gave it “a particular obligation to advocate for and uphold best practice.”
Northern Ireland’s Irish Football Association (IFA) also expressed support for UEFA’s position on the controversy but stopped short of formally withdrawing its endorsement of Infantino.
The developments add to mounting pressure on the FIFA president following controversy over a proposal to introduce private investment into FIFA competitions, including the World Cup. The plan has since been abandoned.
UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and CONCACAF have criticised FIFA’s handling of the proposal, accusing the organisation of “deception” and a “fundamental breach of trust”.
Infantino, who is reportedly seeking re-election in March 2027, nevertheless retains the backing of several national football associations, including Argentina and Mexico, as well as the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
