TikTok said a moderator error delayed the removal of a livestream by media personality Perez Hilton that allegedly showed acts of self-harm, despite the broadcast being detected by the platform’s automated moderation systems within minutes.
A TikTok spokesperson said the livestream was quickly flagged and referred to the company’s US moderation team, but an error by a moderator delayed both the removal of the video and the suspension of Hilton’s account.
The company also said it proactively contacted law enforcement after the livestream was identified.
Responding to online claims that the broadcast remained live for more than 30 minutes, TikTok said the stream was available for roughly half that time, adding that any subsequent livestreams from the account were terminated within 90 seconds.
The incident prompted multiple reports to local authorities, who later confirmed that deputies responded to Hilton’s Miami-area home after receiving calls about an individual livestreaming apparent self-harm.
Police said officers spoke with family members, confirmed Hilton was alone inside the residence, and continued monitoring the situation before he was safely recovered and transported by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to a local hospital for medical treatment.
TikTok said the livestream violated its Community Guidelines, which prohibit content depicting, promoting or encouraging suicide or self-harm.
Hilton’s family and representatives later confirmed that he was receiving medical care in a statement posted on his website.
