Authorities in northern France were working on Wednesday to restore electricity to thousands of homes after widespread power outages caused by the ongoing heatwave that has gripped much of western Europe.
Officials said healthcare facilities and other critical infrastructure were being prioritised, with emergency generators deployed to retirement homes affected by Tuesday’s outages.
According to authorities, the power cuts were caused by a transformer-related incident linked to the extreme temperatures.
“The incident was accidental and related to the current heatwave,” officials said in a statement, adding that no injuries had been reported.
